The Devils Marbles are, in all basicness, a whole bunch of granite boulders spread throughout 1802 hectares, ranging from 50 Centre metres to a 6 meter circumference, some even having stripes, or even stacked in almost impossible positions, or are even split in half due to erosion. Unfortunately there are only three ‘famous’ boulders, mostly because those boulders are the ones that have the most pictures taken of them. |
Aboriginal Significance
The Devils marbles is more a pile of rocks to the aboriginals and is an important part their culture, for there are many dreamtime stories about the Devils Marbles. The aboriginal people of the area, believe that the boulders are eggs of the rainbow serpent, and that, if touched, would cause great harm, or calamity. How they were formed
In reality, or a non-mythical point of view, the Devils marbles are actually huge boulders of granite. Approximated to have formed 1.7 billion years ago, when magma, within the earths crust, began to harden, due to the pressure of the thick layer of sandstone on top. After millions of years, the granite (the magma) surfaces, after the sandstone layer on top has been eroded away. Then, after another series of many years, the granite was eroded into granite boulders, some. |
